In 1997 the average life of a computer tower was 4-6 years and computer monitors 6-7 years. This is expected to fall to 2 years before 2005. By 2005, one computer will become obsolete for every new one put on the market. Simply trashing these computers will add an estimated 8.5 million tons of waste to our landfills. Computer components also contain lead, mercury, cadmium, and other persistent toxic compounds, all capable of contaminating water and air quality, as well as, being harmful to humans.
